“I am honored to have been selected as a recipient of the 2010 Golden Key Undergraduate Award, and it will facilitate my goal of pursuing graduate studies in ethnobotany, food security and indigenous knowledge systems.  I am deeply troubled by industrial civilization's destructive impact on the earth's life support systems and its unconscionable exploitation of cheap human labor, particularly in the global South.  Given our urgent need to build resilient, functioning communities that respond to the ecological context of their local land base, I feel that recognizing the profound place-based knowledge and unique worldviews possessed by many indigenous cultures is imperative.”

“I am truly blessed to be selected by the Golden Key International Honor society as a Graduate Scholar. Because of this award, I’ll be able to continue my education in the fall at Columbia University’s Journalism School pursuing a Masters of Science in Digital Media. I graduate with top honors from the City College of New York. The school awarded me dean’s list credentials and presented me with the Irving Rosenthal Award for outstanding journalism achievement. These accolades bring joy to my family as I am the first to graduate college and set the precedent for generations to come. My humble upbringing is traced to West Harlem where as a child my curiosity led me to discern the socio-economic differences that split my neighborhood from others just a short train ride away. I dreamt of dedicating my life to challenging the underlying constructs that lead to this situation. To show kids in my neighborhood that we need not accept the status quo. We can empower ourselves with knowledge, discipline, determination and generosity to guide ourselves out of our dark tunnels.”

Following graduation with my M.S., I have hopes of becoming a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and to work in a clinical setting with a focus on research and neurogenic communication disorders. I strive to become a well rounded clinician, as well as researcher, and be able to pass on the knowledge I learn to others. I hope to provide others with positive communication skills and an enthusiasm to achieve their goals. It is my hope, that through my educational journey I will fulfill my goals as well as propel myself forward with my ongoing desire to learn and apply new knowledge."

“What I accomplish today is a result of yesterday’s obstacles.  What I do tomorrow reflects my capacity to change another person’s yesterday.  Therefore, I believe that my education has fostered a personal duty to help change the world one person at a time.  This scholarship will assist in making that possible.  I am enrolled in the Sociology Ph.D. program at Bowling Green State University (BGSU).  My major area is Criminology & Deviance with a minor in Social Psychology.  I plan to study the effects of parental incarceration on the psychological development of children and how it varies by race, socio-economic status, and gender.  I am from San Jacinto, CA.  I am also a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, North Central Sociological Association, BGSU Sociology Graduate Student Association, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems.”

Amanda Ellis

“When I received the invitation to become a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society during my sophomore year of undergrad at VCU, I was very excited. I had heard good things about the Chapter at VCU and all the benefits of joining. During my junior year as a biology major/chemistry minor, I decided I wanted to become more involved in the chapter, so I applied for the position of Honorary Member Liason and became a more intricate part of the chapter. I enjoyed being involved so much that I wanted more and was elected Vice President of the VCU Chapter. Being so involved in this Honour society has helped me become a better leader, which has helped me manage a lot of my responsibilities in medical school at Edward via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. During my first year at VCOM, I have joined the Family Medicine Club and have a leadership role in the Psychology/Neurology Club. I was also chosen to be an ambassador for VCOM, which allows me to go back to VCU and my hometown of Virginia Beach to advocate and educate pre-medical students about VCOM and osteopathic medicine.  Winning this award and being recognized for my involvement in Golden Key has been a great honor. I couldn’t believe it when I read the acceptance letter! This award is going to be a huge help in paying for school and reduce my loan debt. I can’t thank the selection committee, my VCU chapter advisor, and Chapter president enough! Without them, I would not have received this amazing award. Thank you.”

Benjamin Farnia

“Winning the Council of Advisors Award is honestly a dream come true! Although words cannot fully express my sincere gratitude, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone at Golden Key for this amazing honor. This generous scholarship will help me pay for tuition and fees as I continue my medical school journey at Baylor College of Medicine, where I’m currently in my second year. Originally from Plano, Texas, I joined Golden Key while attending The University of Texas at Dallas. Many of the qualities that helped me get into medical school were developed through my experiences in Golden Key, where I served as Social Chair for 2 years. Joining Golden Key was by far one of the best decisions I’ve made in my academic career! Currently I’m also a proud member of the American Medical Association and Texas Medical Association.”

Blake Silver

“This past May I graduated from George Mason University with a BA in English and a minor in Art and Visual Technology.  While at George Mason I served as Vice President of our University's chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society and as the representative for Region II to the Council of Student Members.  As an undergraduate, I was also a University Scholar and a member of George Mason’s Honors College.  I served as the university’s student representative to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and did research as part of the Undergraduate Apprenticeship Program.  This fall I will begin working toward an MA in Higher Education Administration at The George Washington University.  I am so honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Golden Key Council of Advisors Award.  The scholarship will provide much needed support to allow me to pursue graduate study over the next two years.  Looking back on my time as an undergraduate, many of my favorite and most memorable moments were with friends from Golden Key, and I am incredibly thankful to have been recognized by the society.”

This donation will allow me to send two Haitian children to attend school for free for one entire year.”

Sean Griffin

“When I finally got accepted into South Texas College of Law, I actually cried with my Mother, as she knows the road taken. I then realized again I had the scholarship award to help me get started. I am deeply honored to win this award, and I receive this with much humbleness. To sum it up in one quote or sentence, “I have won seed money to help me in pursuit of my dream”. The financial problems are trying for everyone, and so I am truly thankful for this award. I will continue to apply for each award I am eligible for with Golden Key. It meant a lot to join Golden Key, and I am as honored then as I am now.”

I’m lucky to have stumbled upon this scholarship prompt because it asked me to talk about the most significant experiences in my life since obtaining my undergraduate degree and how they have influenced my personal and professional goals over the next ten years. In reflecting on this essay, I could see in myself Golden Key’s shared values of achieving our full potential and committing to becoming our best selves to make the most impact. The New Member Community Service Award is a great initiative to encourage young and vibrant minds towards Social Service. I am extremely delighted to have received this award which is an honour to me. I would like to thank all the authorities involved in helping me work towards receiving this award. And I would like to thank the Golden Key Organization for recognizing the Social Work done by me. I am surely going to utilize this award money for the welfare of the society in some way or the other. My message to the youth is that, Community Service is something which you should start doing selflessly and lend a hand towards making this world a better place.
